Coping with Diabetes

Every day, in the United States, more than 2000 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed. Type II diabetes, the most prevalent form of diabetes worldwide, often shows few or even no symptoms!

After eating, food is broken down into what is known as glucose, a sugar carried by the blood to cells throughout the body. Using a hormone known as insulin, made in the pancreas, cells process glucose into energy.

The FreeStyle monitor is great. My wife has a Continual Glucose Monitor and needs to check her blood sugar at night and doen't want to turn a light on. With this monitor it has a built in light for the strip and after the blood is applied to the strip the meter lights up so the reading can be seen.

Apparently the company has stopped making this model, but not the test strips that go with it. It was hard to find locally, but Amazon located it. It was as advertised, and arrived in good condition and time.

Maybe it's because I have never used a Glucose monitor device before but I found the setup and instructions lengthy and often confusing. I am a middle aged man and college grad and though not a genius, the entire process of reading the "Quick" Instructions, the manual, and then the actual Setup and test took well over an hour. My subsequent testing now takes just minutes but I wonder how many people especially senior citizens may be put off by this steep learning curve unless they get some help. In opposition to another reviewer, it's hardley usable right out of the box. However, once indoctrinated in how to use the monitor, I was pleased in it's operation. The monitor comes with a nice traveling pouch, a long manual, a handy log for recording your tests and other reading material. Important...make sure the code on the strips vial matches the code on the monitor or you may get inaccurate results as warned in the manual. Again..read before using which will take some time.

This is the best glucometer we have tried. I have tried One Touch, One Touch Ultra, BD, Bayer, and many more. This is the one that has the features that I have been complaining about the others not having. I test my son a lot at night. This has, not only a back light, but also a little light by the strip so you can see your blood sample without turning on the light. As soon as the blood sample is on the strip the back light turns on. Genius! Great for movie theatres, dark car, etc. I used to have to carry a flash light. Nice small size that fits nicely into your palm. The others often slipped out of my hand. I have nothing bad to say about this product.

This product was purchased for my recently-diagnosed diabetic dog. The response from the FreeStyle Flash glucose monitor is very quick (~7 seconds) and the system needs only the smallest drop of blood to obtain an accurate reading. The large, bright backlit display makes reading the results very easy. We use the dog's ear to obtain the blood and with such a minor stick from the lancet, he doesn't mind the procedure. We tested its reliability and validity on humans and found the system to be quite sufficient for clinical practice. The instructions were clear, concise and comprehensive. I really liked the inclusion of 10 strips and 10 lancing devices, the compact carrying case, and the lithium batteries - the product was ready to use upon unpacking the box. This has been a great product and given that our veterinarian charges $15.00 to obtain a single blood sugar reading, has more than paid for itself. It's accurate, simple to use, small in size and comes with all necessary accessories. By the way, the price was great through Amazon and standard shipping took 5 business days!

As of mid-September 2009, the identical problem described by "Sam" earlier is still occurring, namely that the old type "FreeStyle" test strips are being shipped instead of the newer "FreeStyle Lite" strips, which is what's supposed to be for sale on this page. The two are NOT the same product and are NOT compatible! I figure this is because the wrong paper label got stuck to the box sometime during the distribution process and nobody has bothered yet to correct the problem. And while I always expect there's going to be a few mistakes made in any system, I find it extremely worrying that a problem with the wrong MEDICAL product being shipped still has not been corrected in the month between "Sam's" review and mine.

In a prior review I found fault with the non delivery of my order for diabetes testing strips with Amazon's vendor, Arrowson. Since then, I have changed my opinion back to being positive! The company went out of its was to apologise for its error, and then sent me the strips rapidly with no "hassles" the second time. The price was certainly right, and I am most willing now to give them another try.

Despite the images and description for this product I received FreeStyle test strips (with a sticker affixed to the bottom of the box that said FreeStyle Lite) which are not compatible with the FreeStyle Lite meter.

Amazon? you're starting to tick me off. Who rates medical equipment? We're talking about test strips. My buddy hasn't died of diabetes yet (I bought this for a friend) and he didn't seem to have any problems using the stips, so they are what they are which means 'why bother reviewing them' -r PS: On the other hand, it was nice I got free shipping; and un-nice that I couldn't use my buddy's 'wish list' to send him this item. Amazon: are you on drugs? -=-

This seller is HORRIBLE. If I could give a negative star, I would. I highly advise against buying anything from them. My father never received the item and then the seller had the nerve to REFUSE my refund, even though my dad never got anything in the mail. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SELLER, THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT CUSTOMERS. I'm shocked that Amazon even lets them sell on their site.

I've had diabetes since 2001 and this is the first new meter I've purchased since I bought my first meter. Why did I select this meter? Because I wanted to download the data from my meter to my computer. Lo and behold, I get the meter home and find that it is not compatible with the Apple platform. So, if you are one of the millions of people who owns an Apple computer of ANY kind and have diabetes and want to download information from your blood glucose meter to your computer, don't buy this product!

Purchased this for my Father as all the free ones he was receiving would not work. Very pleased with my purchased. Very easy for him to operate.

My doctor gave me this meter, and because of that I decided to give it a better try than the free ones I had gotten in the mail from other companies. I tried them all, and I will stay with this one! I also recommend it to my family and friends. There is little, or no pain when I stick my finger, and the amount of blood needed is small compared to the need of the other meters I have. The only problem I have had, is when trying to be thrifty, I tried to use a strip twice (They have a test site on each side, I guess for right and left handed people, so I thought I'd try to save money!), and got the error message. I installed a new strip, and had a good reading. It is real easy to read with the back light, quick, and has a great memory for past reading when I forget to write them down, or forget my pen at work.

THE STRIPS WERE NOT ACCURATE-AT LEAST THE 1 OUT OF 3 STRIPS THAT DID WORK! I TRIED THEM ON 3 NEW MONITORS AND THE TEST STRIP ERROR ALERT KEPT APPEARING ON THE METER. WILL NOT PURCHASE AGAIN.

This is a great product and I strongly recommend it's use. It is easy and convenient and less painful than most. Abbott FreeStyle Freedom Lite Blood Glucose Monitor Monitoring System - No Coding Required! Includes carrying case Diabetic

Because cells in the muscles, liver, and fat do not use insulin properly in the body of a person with type II diabetes, they have problems converting food into energy. Eventually, the pancreas cannot make enough insulin for the body's needs. The amount of glucose in the body increases, and the cells are starved of energy.

This starvation of the cells, paired with the high blood glucose level can damage nerves and blood vessels. This leads to complications such as kidney disease, nerve problems, blindness, and heart ailments.

There are a lot of factors that can help to attribute to diabetes cases - lifestyle, environment, heredity - and those who are at risk should be screened regularly to prevent diabetes. Those that are already diagnosed with diabetes should aim to keep their glucose level under control.

But how do you know if you have type II diabetes? After all, it has few symptoms, often no symptoms in some patients. However, if you notice an increased thirst or hunger, a change in weight, or blurred vision, getting tested for type II diabetes is necessary, as only your doctor will be able to help you find the treatment steps necessary to being able to manage your life with diabetes.

Simple changes such as eating right, managing your weight, and keeping your blood sugar level under control may be enough. However, you doctor may prescribe diabetes-regulating medications to assist you in controlling your type II diabetes.

Diabetes is a serious ailment with extreme consequences if it isn't treated properly. But if you follow your doctor's advice and maintain both your lifestyle and blood sugar levels, you can help to prevent the more serious consequences from occurring.
