NOW THYROID ENERGY 90 VegiCapsReviewsThis is a supplement to help support thyroid function. It contains minerals the body needs (and in this day and age is often deficient in) to help the thyroid function properly. It also contains small amounts of herbs which combat fatigue. The amounts are very small, and I'm not sure if they are enough to make very much difference. I firmly believe that most of us are iodine deficient. Iodine, present in kelp, which is part of this supplement, is critical for thyroid function. This is a very good first step to try if you are feeling fatigued. I trust the NOW brand and I think this is a very well-balanced supplement. I will probably take this product for the long term. I have always been satisfied with NOW products. This product seemed to work for a slightly underactive thyroid in helping metabolism and feeling better throughout the day. Not an immediate effect, but definitely over time. Some people commented on a rise in blood pressure- the label clearly states not to take it if you are taking certain other medications such as anti-depressant; I believe those drugs interact with the tyrosine in this product to have that affect. We all need to read labels better, I guess. Overall, though, satisfied with the product, and glad that I can now get it in 2 days with Amazon Prime when I need to refill. I was told that this would be great for my hot flashes. However, I did not see a lot of change in the hot flashes. It does seem to make my blood pressure rise. I already have high blood pressure and this made me double up on my medication. It is just not for me! I began using this product in the Spring to loose a couple pounds for the Summer. Well, let me tell you, this product does produce results in a very short time. Although, the product was working, I noticed my heart began racing within a week time frame. I was suspect that it was increasing my blood pressure as I could hear my heart pounding at night. Also, the final straw was I went to the doctor for a routine exam and discovered my pressure was sky high to the point that she took it three times. She asked what I was taking and told me to stopped immediately. In addition, she had me return in three days to take my pressure again. The results were much better and almost, I repeat, almost normal!! PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING THIS PRODUCT!! Now is a great company . This product is reasonably priced and has all the needful things for a thyroid to get started. You won't need to use it forever, it is part of the building. I lost weight without dieting but cut way back on sugar and eliminated all high fructose corn syrup. Over the winter I lost 20 pounds. I ate all that I wanted. I was not dieting but I was concerned about diabetes as well. No symptoms of diabetes either. I've had to buy new clothes. I highly recommend this product. Average Rating:![]() |

SoLo Bars, Mint Mania, 1.76-Ounce Bars (Pack of 12)ReviewsI am normally not over the moon about nutrition bars, but Solo GI has me there! I love all the flavours, but this one tops them all - it reminds me of the Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookies... I look forward to my preworkout snack more and more these days, it tastes so good it must be sinful! I love the Mint Mania SoLo Bar! The low glycemic quality works well with my metabolism; I get an even energy that lasts. Great for a quick breakfast, for an energy boost before a long workout, or anytime you're hungry and need something to hold you over before a meal. I think the flavor of the Mint Mania SoLo bar is the best I've tasted; not too sweet, great chocolate, and perfectly minty. And it has a pleasing mouth feel; smooth and satisfying. This is by far the best energy bar I've ever tasted. Try it! The texture and flavor of these bars don't go well together. The berry bliss and the chocolate charger are much much better. These bars seemed to "hold back hunger" and kept me satisfied for a longer period of time than others I've tried. The flavors are quite tasty. Beside the fact that even a diabetic can possibly enjoy these, and they are a good energy bar without a sugar spike etc. They also taste quite yummy. the texture is somewhat like a cake brownie, and the mint is sort of mild like an Andes mint. Not real strong. The choco flavor is like a dark chocolate. I love the fact that it is supposed to help keep ones energy up and cravings down. Haven't eaten enough to vouch for this yet, but we went ahead and subscribed for this and the peanut flavor for the monthly shipments to gain the extra discount. Figured we couldn't go wrong. Blood Sugar 101: What They Don't Tell You About DiabetesReviewsThis book is yet another book on taking a pro-active stance against diabetes. She gives lots of information. Some things she says are not how my husband's body reacts to various things. Like the author says, each person is different. She's right, IMHO, about doctors. We have a great doctor, but even at that, we try other things. She has a website as well. If you want to check out her take on things before buying the book, you might check there. There are so many books on handling diabetes. Look around. You might check bookstores to see how various books on diabetes seem to you. Best book I have read about the effects of high blood sugar and how to lower it. I am a type 1 and have found this book very helpful even though it was written primarily for type 2 diabetics. Stongly recomend for anyone with Diabeties. I don't think I'm diabetic or anything. I just noticed I'm a bit sensitive to carbs and felt better on nut flour baked goods and lower carb foods. So I just wanted to understand blood sugar a little better. This book is full of so much fascinating information, I'm so glad I purchased it. I think everyone should read it. I didn't know that the blood sugar fasting test the doctor gives you at your yearly exam usually catches diabetes much later, and usually dosen't catch when you body is beginning to have issues. Also, much of the diabetes research done on whole grains vs processed foods shows whole grains are better, duh. But these same studies do not study the effects of low carb on blood sugar, and since there's no study, your doctor isn't going to recommend it. You will probably hear there's nothing you can do, and just eat piles of whole grains which will kill you a little slower than the processed grains. Yet so many folks have been able to lower blood sugar by lowering carbs. There is so much in this book! Quite simply this is the best book on its subject that I've found after nearly nine months of reading diabetes literature following my own diagnosis as a type 2. It is intelligent, well researched, clearly and concisely written, and above all *inspirational*. Most diabetics are told that no matter what they do their health will slowly but inevitably deteriorate. Jenny Ruhl contradicts and explodes that myth, showing you how - in simple ways, precisely described - ANY diabetic take control of their illness, can lower their blood sugar and start getting their health back. Because much of the book (or at least its advice) contradicts current medical wisdom, it may never win the praise (or the prizes) it richly deserves. It has helped and inspired me and many others. Jenny Ruhl is a treasure - if you're a diabetic, buy it now and start reclaiming your health. And tell your friends. I have read at least 25 books regarding diabetes plus much internet research. This is the best book out there on diabetes. I ordered 10 copies. I am circulating them around two counties in Wisconsin. All I ask is that the people read the book, put their initials on the inside front cover and pass it along to other diabetics, loved ones or health care providers, with instructions for them to read and pass it along. Worth much more than the price. Average Rating:![]() |

FAT TO SKINNY Fast and Easy!: Eat Great, Lose Weight, and Lower Blood Sugar Without ExerciseReviewsOkay so I picked up the book and it has nice size print and it is an easy read. Can be read in a couple of hours. Doug Varrieur thank you for making it easy for me to understand how certain foods break down into sugar. Your simple formula made it easy to go to the grocery store and stock up on healthy tasting, yummy foods. I lost 13 pounds in 2.5 months, but now I know how to lose weight. Besides weight that comes off in a healthy way is more prone to stay off, right? I eat more than I did before on this new way of eating. I Am more satisfied and do not crave sugar. get the book, you will learn a lot. My son bought this book at the Florida State Fair in 2008. He lost 100 lbs with this book! It is the most comprehensible diet book ever! I bought two more copies for my brother and my nephew. Every diabetic should own this book! If they did, there might be a lot less diabetes! My son was not diabetic but just wanted to be healthier. He did so well with this book that he is now featured on the back cover! Proud Mom....Safety Harbor, Fl. I purchased this book, and found it to be a great book about weight loss, I bought so many diet books but, none were like this one. I already lost 70lbs and learn through this book the proper way to eat, lower blood sugar, and the inches just came off. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to be and stay healthy in 2010.... Thanks Doug you change my life!! I am proud to be able to contribute in a small way to Doug's efforts to enlighten people as to the true cause of weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, high-cholesterol and that thing called "metabolic syndrome". You should have been a doctor. In many ways what you're doing now will make a bigger impact on the country's health than anything a doctor could dream of accomplishing. I am so so pleased to have found a book that coincides with everything I have been telling my patients for years. Now I can talk briefly with patients and hand them a book knowing that what is put forth in the text is everything I believe and transcends the stalled stale conversation of low carbs and exercise. This is a seminal work that awakens us to what is all around us but yet invisible. Like water to a fish we have been unable to see what has been in front of us all the time. Water? What water I don't see any water! Sugar? What sugar? I don't see any sugar! Unfortunately our bodies do see all the sugar and respond with obesity and "metabolic syndrome". This book is a must read for anyone interested in taking their health to the next level. Sincerely Dr. Paul Cump, D.O. Family Medicine Fat to Skinny Fast and Easy is a wonderful tool that will hold you buy the hand and walk you through the process of weight loss, I want to share with anyone who is reading this contribution, and is Diabetic... Sugar is EVIL, this book explains why, and by dropping sugar from my diet and limiting my carb intake I have gone from shooting 50 units of insulin three times a day, to shooting ten units twice a day! Weight loss is occuring, honestly I'm not dropping 30 pounds in 30 days, but the benefits to my body are extraordinary. Energy levels are up, by paying a bit of attention to what I choose to put in my face and consume I am making a positive difference to my health. My doctor is thrilled with my sugar levels, and don't think for a moment you are condemned to a life of bland, boring foods... Quite the opposite, the reciepes in the book are tasty, and easy to create. Kudo's to Doug for sharing his story, and for helping in the struggle against weight loss! Buy the book, it's worth the investment of a few dollars! You'll be thanking Doug on Amazon too. Average Rating:![]() |

Doug Varrieur lost more than 100 pounds…and kept it off, by identifying and eliminating the enemy: Sugar! Now he reveals his proven plan for going from fat to skinny—easily, effortlessly, and quickly... |
I've had diabetes for seven years now, but to tell you that how I maintain weight is perfect would be totally wrong of me. However, I can advise you to follow my steps because I know what works and what doesn't. Before I really begin I must also say that I have been brought up by great parents who taught me to eat everything, and so I do! If there is something that you don't like, there are loads of other diabetic recipes and ideas that you will eat and appreciate.
I am a university student and I like to buy fresh and organic produce from where I live. I believe that this is important because it can be the most good for your body and contain more nutrients and vitamins than most supermarket produce. I like to source food from my fortnightly farmers market in town, which sells amazing meat and dairy produce and fresh in season fruit and vegetables. This is another important thing to remember, that eating fruit and vegetables in their season means that they will taste better as well as doing you good. I have a lot of influence from Western European cuisine (mainly France and Italy) as you will tell, but I do not profess to be a chef and everything is easy to make and very convenient.
I have read countless diet books and diabetic recipe/diet books, and I came to a conclusion that I think really works. I fused all the good things from the diets (but not from every diet) and sort of put together my own one. I call this my Juvenile Diabetes Healthy Diet!
The "rules" that I would lay down are as follows:
1. Cut back on snacks and then change the type of snacks you eat.
Certainly my biggest downfall although it wasn't really apparent to me. When I first started at University, I had little or no routine which meant that filling my day was difficult and popping into the kitchen for a snack, no matter how healthy it felt, was a regular occurence. This is one of the hardest things to do for some people, but establishing a great routine is essential to great diabetes care. The types of snacks to be eating are unsalted nuts, dried unsweetened fruit, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables (I love fresh red pepper and cucumber), dark chocolate (richer and nicer and you only want 2 squares usually).
2. Cut back on white flour and embrace wholemeal carbs.
This is the most essential part of your diet, and the thing that can show the biggest increase in loss of weight. Some diets in fact jsut focus on this point, and are very successful. Wholemeal (especially stoneground wholemeal) is so good for you and has so much more flavour in it that switching is much easier than you think. Most people are really surprised at the ranges you can get in you supermarket, again remember that the bread that is best for you is the one that is freshest with least perservatives or added ingredients. Also, brown or basmati rice is great with a lovely nutty texture. Wholemeal pasta is great and for your potatoes I would totally recommend the smaller new potatoes.
3. Stop drinking cocktails, start drinking wine.
Cocktails are full of sugar, colourants and preservatives. As a student I have had loads of practice at going out and not drinking cocktails, so my drink of choice is Malibu and Diet Coke if I feel I have to drink something and I make it last all night. I can then top up with Diet Coke (which has almost no sugar in it) and it looks as though I am drinking Malibu, who is to know. If you are out at a restaurant, red wine is much better than anything else you can order, (except water of course!) and it has been proven that the anti-oxidants in red wine are great for keeping a healthy heart. The recommended amount is one glass a day with your evening meal.
4. Start cooking more fruit and vegetables.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are a great way to get all the vitamins and minerals you need. And there are so many different ways in which to cook vegetables, but I find that raw is the best followed closely by steamed. Both of these ways preserve all their natural goodness as well. I will follow this post with another diabetes recipes post.
5. Drink more water.
I know you have heard people say this many times before, but the benefits of drinking more water are endless. A few tips on how to get more water into your day are firstly to put bottles of water at all the places you go in the house or work. So keep one in your desk, on your desk, a glass in the kitchen, the bedroom, the sitting room, etc. Try and drink all these glasses up and you will be well on your way to 8 glasses a day. The trick is to add a glass every few days or so, if you try to drink all that water in one go you won't be so inclined to drink 8 glasses again, trust me! Have a go, it's amazing how great you will feel.
