The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly DiagnosedReviewsAfter reviewing several books on diabetes, this was one of the first books I read after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes over one year ago. Nearly 3 weeks had passed before I was scheduled to see the dietitian and receive a glucose meter. The author/patient was very informative and straight forward on what to expect. This book helped me to start changing my habits immediately and I was well informed before I had my first appointment. I have gained much more knowledge in my own research than what I received in a couple of appointments with medical professionals. It is definitely up to the individual to take control of this disease. I encourage you to seek information from sources that have had proven success managing diabetes. I have had great results in dropping my A1c as long as I keep starchy carbohydrates and sweets to the minimum recommended by the dietitian. This is one of the best books on diabetes I have read. Becker is straightforward and explains the disease quite bluntly. It has helped me motivate myself to control my blood sugar and diet. After reading her book I have dropped my BG 90+pts Supposed to be about type 2..... then WHY did she dwell so much on type 1. Much useless information..... not much to help you LIVE with diabetes! This book is one of the first that I read after being diagnosed with Diabetes. It provides a wealth of information and also indepth information so you really feel like you understand and do not have a cursory knowledge. I love the author's suggestion that you must be in charge of your health care. It is empowering and she tells you the tests that your doctor may not do that you should request and what information they provide. She teaches you how to test your own body's reaction to different foods. I highly recommend this book. This book has answered so many questions I had and answers for questions I didn't have. Greatest book I bought for learning about how to take care of myself and why I feel the way I do. Why I am hungry all the time. Why I crave sweets. Why I feel tired all the time and more. Great buy. You won't be dissappointed. Average Rating:![]() |

The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed [1ST YEAR TYPE 2 DIABETES 2/E] |
1) If you find you are excessively thirsty, not just after extreme exercise or hot weather.
2) You seem to constantly have a dry mouth - even if you've just had a drink.
3) You find you are having to urinate frequently.
4) You have unexpected weight loss or gain (even though you may be constantly hungry and eating well. Of course you may be eating the wrong things which would probably make your pre-diabetes symptom worse).
5) You feel lethargic. You always feel as if you've got no energy; you are weak and tired all the time.
6) Sometimes your vision is blurry - be careful, untreated eye problems caused through diabetes can lead to blindness. You should have regular eye checks, especially as you get older because your eyes can be the early warning signal for many diseases – not just diabetes.
7) You have cuts or sores or bruises (especially on your feet) that are slow to heal.
If you experience excessive itching or soreness in the genital area or yeast infections (which can be misdiagnosed as thrush) it may be a sign of too much sugar in your urine.
AT RISK FACTORS:
There are different types of diabetes; pre-diabetes, type 1, type 2, gestational and maturity onset. And, dependent upon your age, lifestyle and family history you may be more susceptible to developing diabetes.
Foe example you may be more prone to developing diabetes if any of these factors apply to you:
- Your family background is African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic American/Latino.
- You have a parent, brother, or sister with diabetes.
- You are aged over 45 and are overweight you might be at risk of diabetes type 2

- Your cholesterol levels are not good.
