Are The Foods We Eat, Always Safe?
Reference Webster's New World College Dictionary:
Food: 1. any substance taken into and assimilated by a plant or animal to keep it alive and enable it to grow and repair tissue; nourishment; nutriment.
2. Anything that nourishes or stimulates; whatever helps something to keep active, grow, etc.
But does it enable to grow and repair tissue, or give proper nourishment and stimulants to our mind and body? There was a time when this question could be answered with an astounding yes. But this certainly isn't true anymore!

Fit & Fresh Healthy Food Combo PackReviewsI love this set. My mother gave it to me for Christmas, as I had been complaining about my lack of good, functional containers to take my lunch to work. These work perfectly. I don't have much use for the drink container, as I don't really drink protein shakes. But, even without the bottom compartment, it's a good cup and it keeps the drinks COLD. The salad container is great as well- holds a ton! Though, it's a bit heavier than I thought it would be- even when empty. Not a big deal though, completely manageable. The lunch to go box is my favorite though! I freeze the gel pack every night, and it's ready to pop in the next morning. No trouble with it fitting or anything. I pack bread or a wrap or a deli flat in the bottom with some cheese, then my sandwich filling in one of the small containers and a side dish or fruit in the other. Perfect proportions! I've been taking these containers to work every day since Christmas. They seem to be holding up great. I can't speak to durability in the dishwasher or microwave though, as I have done neither. I hand wash every night and only take cold foods in them. I'm quite happy with these. Makes me excited to pack my lunch every night. I thought that I would love this item but the drink canister does not stay closed. My son and daughter took them to our co-op in their back packs and it leaked all over their stuff. I also bought the one with the mixer squirlly thing in it and have had problems with that leaking also. The salad keeper works well but there is no room for plasic ware as was advertised. The smaller containers in the lunch keeper leak also. I was not impressed! Effective way to send lunches to work in an appetizing way. The end of the "brown bag" lunch. The ice packs built into the packs keep the food cool until microwaved (if hot food is needed). I've had mine for 2 years, and wash the kids in the dishwasher....and they are durable enough that they are still in great condition. Look great too! Makes taking lunch to work much more appetizing than a brown bag and plastic zip bags. This review is exclusively for the rectangular container. I purchased it alone at Wegman's for ~$12.00 (then bought 3 more we love it so much). I was looking for a container to send my toddler's lunch. What I love about this box is that it keeps cool until lunch time - no refrigeration necessary. Note box prob can't be opened by a young child - it stays shut pretty tight. The container: The rectangular container has a few inches deep of space at the very bottom, on top of that sits the ice pack (doesn't touch food below if std sandwich sz), then there are two small rectangular containers that sit on top of the ice pack. Each of those two small containers has a lid that closes tightly. Then the lid for the entire box (purple in the pic) covers the entire container. We put a sandwich in the bottom, ice pack on that, then put fruit in one small container and veggies in the other. As mentioned, the small containers stay shut and if closed properly (by adult, not easy for small one to close it tightly) then it doesn't leak. My only complaint: on the top lid there's a small piece that sticks out a bit so one can easily open the container. On all 4 of our containers, this small lip has broken. All the small inner containers are fine, but the top outer one has broken on all. It can still be opened, but it's a bit annoying. Overall we love this. I know many adults take their lunches in this as well to avoid the office fridge. Highly recommended! I love this set. I was reading all the reviews of the various other Fit & Fresh products and couldn't decide which to try... so this set worked well for me because it has 3 different pieces for a low price. The set comes with 'Lunch on the Go' (holds a sandwich and has 2 small containers for sides or sammich fixins'), a salad & dressing holder (with spork), and a cool cup for smoothies or dips. PROS: - The lids fit well so I don't have to worry about the containers tipping. - The coldpacks work well so I don't need to bring an insulated lunchbag to work - Within this set there are a variety of storage options so I have the perfect container whether I am bringing a sandwich, or hummus and chips, or cheese and fruit, or whatever. - It's cute CAN'T COMMENT: - I have read that the lids warp in the DW. I don't know - I handwash. - I have read that the dressing dispenser is awkward to use. I don't know -I don't do dressing. BOTTOM LINE: If you're looking for an easy AND versatile storage set to take your lunch to work, and you don't mind plastic, this is it. Average Rating:![]() |

Fit & Fresh Smart Portion Chill Container Set, 2 Cups (Pack of 3)ReviewsThey would've gotten 5 stars if the tubs could stack better together (they don't). Other than that these things are great for picknicks, work, babies etc I just bought these for $8.99 at Target. Have yet to use them yet. Didn't realize they weren't leak-proof when i bought them. I assumed that because these looked like similar plastic containers (the kind that are strong enough to reuse, but cheap enough to throw away), they'd be of roughly equal quality. They're not. They're much flimsier despite costing more. They dent and deform easily. And as others have mentioned, it's not leakproof, so this is not the way to transport gazpacho or a fruit cocktail with juice. There's a reason the company's photos show only solid foods in these containers! As the name suggests, these are "chill" containers. I wouldn't use these like my other containers, to put warm leftovers in them or heat them up later. The plastic gets even softer and flimsier when it's warm - even when I'm just washing by hand! (It's supposed to be dishwasher and microwave safe, but I'm not going to chance it.) The freezer insert is great, which is lucky because the thin plastic of the container is not a particularly good insulator for your food. I was going to give only one star, but decided to give extra credit because this was at least a good idea which hopefully someone else will duplicate in a better product. Fit 'n' Fresh would have been smarter to work with an existing container manufacturer like Gladware to create freezer inserts that work with the perfectly good semi-disposable containers that we may already have in our cabinets. Nice-sized containers for veggies and fruit. They are not straight-lined rectangles; the sides curve in slightly. They stack well. A sandwich (not too thick) fits if you cut it in half and stack one half on the other, but not much if any room left for the cold pack. Leak resistant, but not leak proof. The cold packs don't break the lids if you slide them in and out. The little tabs are not meant to bend. [...] I bought these containers with some hesitation after reading some of the reviews. I am glad I did buy them, they come in very handy when I am on the road or even when I am in the mood to munch on something at the office and I am not reaching for that candy. My only complaint is that when measuring something out, such as cherry's, it doesn't leave much room for the ice pack. Other than that, I do love these, and I am glad I bought them. Glucerna Shake Creamy Chocolate Delight, 8 Ounce Bottles (Pack of 24)ReviewsI've used every diet shake and the other brand of "Diabetic supplement shake" that is available out there... In my opinion: For taste and effectiveness, hands down, this stuff is great. It mixes up great, no clumps of crud when you get to the bottom of the bottle. I think it tastes good, but it has to be really chilled. I actually liked this shake. I tried it today at Costco at their sample table and ensured that they did not mix other stuff with it, and found it extremely palatable. I think that this might make a great in between meal snack or a good breakfast, both used for a great weight management plan, in my case. I don't really care if this is for diabetics or not, as I am not one, but I think it can be a useful meal replacement (little more protein will help here) or snack just because it tastes good, and it is really really hard to find something that tastes good. Thumbs up!!! This nutritional shake works for a quick lunch to wash down a sandwich. They were designed for the diabetic in mind so they won't win a gourmet award. I buy them because they are shelf stable and do not need refrigeration. I like to buy them from Amazon because they have a longer shelf life indicating more direct form the manufacturer. This product is nowhere like the kind sold in the can which is unavailable . It's thin even when shook and shook and shook. The taste doesn't even remotely taste of chocolate. Pass on this one. ZOIC Nutrition Drink, Belgian Chocolate (Pack of 24)ReviewsI bought this for several months on subscription and it seemed fine to me. Things like this are bought for a specific purpose and it seemed to fit those guidelines and be both drinkable and convenient. Much better when chilled. This is not only the best tasting nutrition drink, but it really controls my hunger cravings, especially when I want chocolate! I have already lost a few pounds while using this drink as a snack. I also looooove this product because it gives me 26 vitamins and minerals, it is 99% fat free, and so good for my heart! I have tried drinks like Slim Fast, and it doesn't even come close to ZOIC. I USED to get Zoic shipped monthly (subscribe and save) and it WAS excellent. I always got the French Vanilla and knew I could count on good tasting high quality protein. I have a medical problem that requires I have a minimum of 75 grams of protein a day and found having 2 of these with my other protein supplementation to be really satisfying and tasty and reasonably priced. Suddenly the can changed, as did the taste and then when I read the label I discovered another change...no longer splenda sweetened, no longer 110 calories, no longer 4 grams of carbs no longer 21 grams of protein. I wrote Solis brands (the manufacturer) and got no response. I've cancelled my subscription. I cannot afford the costs of drinking 4 or more of these a day and now they taste nasty. It isn't worth the cost anymore. I can get higher protein using a protein powder...or even using 2 Profects instead (1 of the 50 gram and 1 of the 25 gram tubes). Zoic is no longer the value for money it was...and still no explanation as to why. I am in the ketosis/induction phase of a reduced calorie low carb diet and have been looking for a low fat low carb nutrition drink. This is it. Most of the other "nutrition" drinks on the market are either high in fat calories, carb calories or both. For a high protein low fat (1 gram per serving) low carb drink I think it tastes remarkably good. Using the Atkins Advantage milk chocolate delight shake as taste/flavor/texture reference point, ZOIC is less robust in flavor and not as thick. I would NOT call ZOIC watery. Gatorade is watery. The Atkins Advantage drinks taste good but half of their calories come from fat. Good for gaining weight. For me ZOIC is palatable and more nutritious. I really can't see why people try this product and complain about its taste. If you are looking for a milk shake go to a fast food joint. In summary, ZOIC offers major nutritional benefits and minor flavor concessions when compared to other nutrition drinks on the market. I will buying the ZOIC Belgian chocolate flavor again, and I will be trying the vanilla flavor soon! As much as I love Amazon I wish retail stores in my neck of the woods carried ZOIC. Strongly recommended. The protein content has changed from 21 grams to 15 grams. Not sure why they changed but the "new" product has 15 grams. Average Rating:![]() |

Glucerna Shake Homemade Vanilla, 8 Ounce Bottles (Pack of 24)ReviewsThe product it's self is good. It is the subscribe and save part that I am having a problem with. I recieved the notice that it would be shipped shortly and a link if I needed any changes. It was a couple of days after I recieved the notice but I had not recieved a notice that it was being processed, or had been shipped yet. I went in hopeing to increase that order only to two cases. The next day I went to check and see if that order had been changed to two cases. The first order I could find listed was for January. I could find nothing saying I had an order shipped. That last order listed was for Nov. 11th. I checked send next order now. Then I got a notice with a shipping NO. saying one case was shipped. Then a second notice with a different shipping No. saying it was shipped. Then the next day I got a notice telling my requested now order was getting processed. I went in and tried to cancell that one because instead of two cases that well be four cases. It came back can no longer make changes to that order. Please show any orders being processed with your list of order history. Also on most sites there is a contact us. I could find no contact us listed anywhere. Jo What a great product! Living in a household with two diabetics, I am always careful of the nutrition I give them. We were using Ensure for my mother before she was diagnosed with diabetes. Glucerna is made by the same people that make Ensure, and it is safe for diabetics. We were worried about how good it would taste, etc. Well, she actually likes it better than Ensure, and so does my husband who is also diabetic. It gives him a quick meal supplement during his busy day, and it does not upset his blood-sugar balance. I have used these shakes for a few years now. I use them as a quick meal replacement for breakfast or lunch if I am on the go. During some recent medical issues, I was a bit nauseous, but I could always drink these. They are great tasting and give a lot of nutrients. I do wish that they had a little more protein in them. Anyway, now that I am feeling better, I still use these shakes because I like them. Once in a while, I even use them to make 'real' shakes....I put one in a blender with banana, ice, a tsp. of sugar-free pudding and a few drops of vanilla extract.....A great (and filling) way to start my day! Glucerna Shake Homemade Vanilla, 8 Ounce Bottles (Pack of 24)I used to because it was prescibeed tome by the doctor how put in the tube peg, This all i could eat. I no longer need the product. I am wondering how I can cancel my monthly order, since I no longer need it. Average Rating:![]() |

As a good example, in 1880 it was evident in the general population, that there were around 2.8 cases per 100,000 people who were diabetics. Then this rose to around 29.7 cases per 100,000 people in 1949. But then, in that same year, 1949, the manor in which they started keeping statistics was changed, to where the 29.7 cases were now 16.4 cases per 100,000 people. The consequence coming out of this change was to obscure what was actually the incredible rise in diabetic cases over this same period. Of course during that time period there was no distinction between Type I, and Type II diabetes it was known simply as diabetes.
Today, Type II diabetes alone has affected around 10 to 20% of the population; this is up from a low 0.0028% in the 1880's. The cause for this seems to be connected directly to the reengineering of our once natural food supply. It appears that certain essential nutrients have been removed from our foods for the sole purpose of extending its shelf life. But the problem grew even more intensive and dangerous. If we look to the same 100 year period, as we see the diabetes epidemic increase, we must also take note to what occurred within the food industry. As we do this, we have to notice the many coincidences that exist between the almost complete corruption of our food supply and our massive disease epidemic.
As one looks back on the efforts being made to substitute artificial food as the real thing, we will find that it goes back to the time of Napoleon. It has always been the enormous profits as being the motivation factor that is possible with artificial food. It was a Frenchman named Hippolyte Mege-Mouries that invented what is now known as Margarine. He did this in order to win a contest that was sponsored by Napoleon III for the invention of a palatable table fat. We patented his invention in England in 1869. Based on today's standards, this Margarine was barely edible. It wasn't until 1874 when Margarine was first introduced to us in America. It wasn't too palatable, for it consisted of such things as Hog Fat, Gelatin, Fat, Bleach, Mashed Potatoes, Gypsum and Casein.
It was in 1899 when David Wesson established a vacuum and high temperature process for deodorizing cottonseed oil. It was the next year when he marketed "Wesson" oil. It took him over ten years to fully develop his hydrogenation process. Then in 1903, William Norman patented the hydrogenation process. This process was used to prevent unsaturated fatty acids from becoming rancid, by turning them into saturated fats.
It was then around 1911 that the artificial fat business actually began to take off. These artificial fats did not spoil and turn rancid as un-refrigerated natural products do. It was also this same year that Crisco came upon the food scene. Even the Jewish community accepted Crisco, because it was considered to be "Kosher".
But, it wasn't until the time of WWII that Margarine finally became popular in America, even though it was taking up around 40% of the market, since the 1920's. Formerly prior to WWII, there had been restrictive laws against Margarine which were repealed, and then Margarine became the dietary staple, as was motherhood and apple pie. And soon after this, it was followed by Crisco and artificial lard. It was also during this same period that refined oils made great inroads into the market place and became attractive to the consumer. It was these refined oils that actually made the manufacturer look great to the housewives of that time. It seems that no one ever noticed that even the insects would not eat of these oils, when any was spilled.
But by this time, it was very evident that these artificial oils and other product were here to stay. No one ever seemed to take note, or gave any thought to the long term consequences on the health of the nation that came with these cheap artificial foods. The whole period that started in the 1930s up until the present, was increasingly proliferated by a market driven science, one that was out to change consumer food habits. The complete idea was to wean the consumers away from the animal fat and cold pressed vegetable fat and seeds that had worked and was healthy for generations, and entice them to the new refined oils. Saturated fat was declared to be bad by salespeople posing as scientists, and as well, by the real scientists that were prostituting their trade.
The American Eskimo, whose diet formally consisted of about 60% animal fat, remained healthy without any signs of diabetes for several generations. But, after they became wealthy from their pipeline revenue, they adopted the typical American diet of artificial foods. Then within one generation, they had degenerated health wise, to the same health status that was then considered normal in America.
As scientific studies increased, several misleading studies came out regarding artificial fats, and the oil companies asserted the value of "polyunsaturated" or "monounsaturated" oils to ones health. There is no law that says they must tell you the truth, that these are really "transfats"; so they will not tell you, that a "polyunsaturated transfat" and a "monounsaturated" transfat, are poisonous. A polyunsaturated Cis, or natural fat, is a desirable and necessary part of a healthy diet. So now you know!
So, due to all of this, it becomes more evident that the health trend will continue to worsen, and more and more people will continue on the path of becoming Type II diabetics. That is, without some kind of dietary change, such as the living food program.
